Montreal is the largest city in the province of Quebec.
With a population of around 1,800,000 and a metropolitan population of around 4,300,000 it is the second-largest in Canada, and the eighth-largest city in North America.
The village was founded in 1642 as Ville-Marie, or “City of Mary”, and was centered near Mount Royal, the triple-peaked mountain, from where it borrowed it’s modern name.
