Toronto

Toronto is the most populous city in Canada and the capital city of the Canadian province of Ontario. With a population of 2,794,356 in 2021,vc it is the fourth-most populous city in North America. Together with other 25 urban, suburban and rural municipalities form the Greater Toronto Area with around 6,000,000 people.

We visited Toronto several times in the last few years and this post reflects this and our past visits to the area.

One of the most pituresque points to visit in the city is Casa Loma.

It is a Gothic Revival castle-style mansion and garden in midtown that is now a historic house museum and landmark. It was constructed from 1911 to 1914 as a residence for financier Sir Henry Pellatt. The architect was E. J. Lennox, who designed several other city landmarks.

Due to its unique architectural character in Toronto, Casa Loma has been a popular filming location for movies and television. Some of the movies filmed there are:

  • X-Men (2000): Served as the exterior of Professor X’s School for Gifted Youngsters.
  • Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010): Featured the castle’s grand staircase and other areas.
  • X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009): Used for various scenes in the Wolverine origin story.
  • The Tuxedo (2002): Clark Devlin’s luxurious home in the film.
  • Crimson Peak (2015): The library was used for the ballroom party scene.
  • Chicago (2002): Parts of the musical were filmed at the castle.
  • The Vow (2012): The romantic drama starring Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum.
  • The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (2013): Featured as a significant location in the fantasy film.
  • The Pacifier (2005): Vin Diesel’s action-comedy used the castle.
  • Ready or Not (2019): The horror-comedy used the iconic estate.

The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) is a museum of art, world culture and natural history.

It is one of the largest museums in North America and the largest in Canada. It attracts more than one million visitors every year, making it the most-visited museum in Canada.

The Toronto City Hall is the seat of the municipal government of Toronto, and one of the city’s most distinctive landmarks. Designed by Viljo Revell and engineered by Hannskarl Bandel, it is an example of Neo-Expressionist Modern . Adjacent is the Nathan Phillips Square public square, designed and opened together with the hall in 1965. The old city hall is also a very interesting building adjacent to the area.

The Cathedral Church of St. James is an Anglican cathedral in the Toronto downtown area. It is the location of the oldest congregation in the city, with the parish being established in 1797.

The St. Lawrence Market is a major public market in downtown Toronto.

Other interesting point in the city are the Queen’s Quay Termina sidewalk, the CN Tower and the Ripley Aquarium of Canada and Chinatown.
