Dynjandi

After Bolafjall we drove south from Ísafjörður on Route 60 toward Dynjandi — the largest waterfall in the Westfjords. The waterfall is visible from the road several kilometres before the turnoff — a white vertical streak against the dark mountain above Dynjandivogur bay at the inner end of Arnarfjörður. It looks smaller than it is from a distance. The car park sits at the base. From there a marked path climbs 1 mile with around 300 feet of elevation gain alongside the Dynjandisá river to the top.

Bolafjall

After Ósvör we drove up Bolafjall — the highest point you can reach by road in the Westfjords at 2,093 feet. The access road branches off Route 630 above Bolungarvík and climbs 6 miles to the summit on a narrow gravel track with gradients up to 12% and no guardrails. The road was built in 1986 for military purposes and opened to civilian traffic in 2002.

Ísafjörður and Ósvör Museums

Today we visited two museums covering different chapters of the fishing industry that built the Westfjords. In the morning we walked through the Westfjords Heritage Museum in Ísafjörður, housed in the oldest cluster of buildings in Iceland, covering everything from open rowboat fishing to the Cod Wars. In the afternoon we drove through the tunnel to Bolungarvík to visit Ósvör, a small outdoor reconstruction of a 19th century fishing station on the shore.
