We left the campground at the national park on a very wet day. The rain was steady, but there was one stop we wanted to do before moving on, so we drove the short way to Svínafellsjökull.

Svínafellsjökull is a glacier tongue coming down off Vatnajökull, one of the many outlet glaciers that reach from the icecap toward the lowland. It was drizzling when we got there. The ice comes down in a broad tongue, broken and crevassed, grey and white at the front where it meets the rock, with cracks and ridges running across it and blue showing deeper in. Meltwater sits in a small lagoon at the foot of it.

The place has been used as a film location more than once. The ice planet in Interstellar was shot here, and this area stood in for the frozen country north of the Wall in Game of Thrones.

From there we got back on Route 1 and drove east. The rain settled in for the day, low cloud sitting on the mountains, but the driving was still good. For a while the road runs along the edge of the sand plains, with the glaciers behind us, and then it reaches the coast and starts to wind, in and out along the shore where the land begins to break up into the East Fjords.

From the truck cab we were warm and dry, watching the mountains and the water go by through the glass. We stopped just before Djúpivogur to overnight. The plan is to visit the town when the weather clears.
