We left the campground in the town of Bakkagerði in the morning and followed the road along the coast toward the Hafnarhólmi puffin colony. The route traced the shoreline, with views across the bay and the surrounding mountains. The weather was cool, with light wind and clear visibility.
After a short drive, we arrived at Hafnarhólmi and walked to the viewing platforms overlooking the rocky islet. Numerous puffins were gathered on the rocks and around their burrows, while others flew back and forth between the colony and the sea. Other seabirds were also present around the harbor and cliffs.
What impressed us most was how accustomed the puffins seemed to people. We had seen puffins before in other locations, but never at such close range. Many remained perched on the rocks only a few inches from the viewing areas, showing little concern about the visitors watching them. This allowed us to observe their behavior in detail and take photographs that would have been impossible from a greater distance.
We spent time watching the birds arrive from the sea, interact around the nesting areas, and disappear into their burrows before exploring the harbor surroundings and continuing on with the day’s journey.
